Knowledge of pediatric-specific considerations is often lacking in the general orthopedic and sports rehabilitation setting. This course will provide clinicians with an overview of important and unique differences that must be taken into account when rehabilitating the pediatric athlete/patient. This course will introduce a rehabilitation framework, review common pediatric specific musculoskeletal pathologies, discuss the impact of growth and development on the rehabilitation process, and provide unique strategies for the correction of movement pattern dysfunction. This is an intermediate-level course for physical therapists and athletic trainers working in the outpatient or sports facility setting.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. The Five Phases of Rehabilitation
This chapter will outline the five phases of rehabilitation for the treatment of young athletes to guide the clinician’s decision-making throughout the rehabilitation process. Understanding the goals of each phase will help the clinician formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
2. Overview of Pediatric-Specific Musculoskeletal Pathologies
This chapter will cover musculoskeletal pathologies that are unique to the growing patient, including growth plate injuries, osteochondral lesions, and apophyseal injuries. Understanding how these pathologies present will improve the clinician’s assessment and differential diagnosis.
3. Growth and Development
This chapter will teach the clinician how to determine age in the young athlete/patient. Understanding periods of rapid growth and development will help guide the appropriate selection of treatment interventions.
4. Concepts of Motor Learning
Assessment and treatment of movement pattern dysfunction is at the forefront of pediatric rehabilitation. This chapter will teach motor control strategies to help the clinician formulate a treatment plan for the correction of movement pattern dysfunction.
